General questions
How much does insulation cost in Ontario?+
It depends on the space and the product. An attic top up on a typical home usually runs from $1,800 to $3,500. A drill and fill on a two storey home is often in the $4,000 to $8,000 range. Basement and commercial work is quoted per project. Every quote is free.
Are there rebates for insulation?+
Yes. Programs change year to year, but insulation upgrades often qualify for federal and provincial rebates such as Enbridge Home Efficiency Rebate Plus. We help with the paperwork.
Do you offer financing?+
Yes. We have financing options that let you spread the cost of a bigger project across manageable monthly payments. Ask about it during your free quote.
How long does a typical job take?+
Most attic top ups are done in a single day. A drill and fill on an average home is one to two days. Basements and commercial projects are quoted by the day.
Do you offer a warranty?+
Yes. We stand behind our workmanship, and manufacturer warranties on the materials we install apply as well.
Are you insured?+
Yes. CYM Insulation is fully insured and WSIB compliant. Certificates available on request.
Spray Foam Insulation
Is spray foam safe once it is cured?+
Yes. Once fully cured it is inert. Our crew wears full protection during the spray and we ventilate before letting anyone back in.
How thick should I go?+
It depends on the assembly. For basement walls we usually recommend two inches of closed cell for a strong vapour barrier. Attic and ceiling depths vary. We size it during the quote.
Can spray foam be added to an older home?+
In many cases, yes. If we can access the cavity from the inside or through the rim joist, we can spray it. For finished exterior walls, drill and fill is usually a better fit.
Home Insulation
Where should I start if my home is drafty?+
The attic is usually the highest impact. From there we look at the basement rim joist and any exterior walls that feel cold.
Do I need to move out during the install?+
For most projects, no. Spray foam areas need a short ventilation window, and we schedule around your family.
Commercial Insulation
Do you carry the right insurance?+
Yes. We are fully insured and WSIB compliant. Certificates are available on request.
Can you work off hours?+
Yes, for occupied commercial spaces we can quote evenings and weekends.
Agricultural Insulation
Can you insulate around livestock?+
We prefer an empty barn, but where relocation is not practical we can stage the work to minimize stress on animals.
Will spray foam handle washdown?+
Closed cell foam handles washdown well. For high-pressure environments we can coat the foam with a protective finish.
Attic Insulation
What R value should my attic be?+
Current Ontario best practice for existing homes is R60 in the attic. Most homes we visit sit closer to R20 or R30.
Do I need to remove the old insulation?+
Not usually. If the old material is dry and clean we top up over it. If there is moisture, pests, or contamination we remove first and start fresh.
Are there rebates available?+
Yes. Programs change year to year, but insulation upgrades often qualify for provincial and federal rebates.
Crawl Space Insulation
Should I insulate the ceiling or the walls of my crawl space?+
In a heated home we insulate the walls of the crawl space and seal the vents. Ceiling insulation belongs in unheated crawl spaces only.
Will insulation trap water?+
Not when it is installed correctly. Closed cell foam is the water barrier, so any moisture stays outside the wall. We inspect for active leaks before we start.
Metal Building Insulation
How thick should the foam be?+
Two to three inches is typical for condensation control. We can go thicker where you want a stronger thermal envelope.
Can you spray around stored equipment?+
We prefer an empty building. Where that is not practical we can stage the work by zone.
Pole Barn Insulation
Do I need a vapour barrier?+
Closed cell foam acts as the vapour barrier. That is one of its main advantages in pole barn assemblies.
Can you insulate just the ceiling?+
Yes. For an unheated pole barn where condensation is the main issue, spraying the underside of the roof deck is often enough.
Insulation Removal
Do you test for asbestos?+
If we suspect asbestos we recommend a lab test before any removal. We do not perform asbestos abatement, but we coordinate around it.
How long does removal take?+
Most attics can be cleared in a single day.
Spray Applied Roofing Systems
How long does a spray foam roof last?+
With a fresh coat every 10 to 15 years, the underlying foam can last decades.
Is it suitable for cold Ontario winters?+
Yes. We install when temperatures and dew point are within manufacturer specs, which typically means late spring through fall.
